The CAT is a questionnaire for people
with COPD – it’s short, simple and easy to complete.
The CAT is designed to give a good picture of how the illness affects a particular person, including how they feel both physically and emotionally. It will also help that person explain clearly how they’re feeling to their doctor or nurse. It’s hoped that the doctor and nurse, armed with this knowledge, will be able to address any issues or resolve any problems.
The questions included in the CAT were chosen following extensive talks with people with COPD, ensuring that the questionnaire deals with the issues that are most important to them. We believe this is important, because we want the CAT to give a voice to people with COPD, and a voice they can recognise as their own – in that sense the CAT is unique.
The CAT can be completed before a meeting with your doctor or nurse, or you could complete the questionnaire in between meetings and have your scores ready to discuss. Experts advise that it is best to complete the CAT by yourself and not with help from your doctor or nurse. Remember, you should take the CAT at regular intervals – about once every 3–6 months. This way, the test will provide valuable insight into how your health changes over time.
The CAT is available as a paper-based questionnaire, or can be completed online. Use the ‘TAKE THE TEST’ icon at the bottom of the left-hand menu to find out more about these options.
